After struggling with form over the last couple of seasons, 34-year-old Gael Monfils is finally starting to play some decent tennis.
The World No. 20 enjoyed a good run in the North American swing, most notably in the Canadian Masters where he reached the quarterfinal. It was his first such run since the 2020 ATP Dubai post which, a pandemic-struck season disrupted his momentum.
Following that run in Toronto, Monfils made it to the third round in the Cincinnati Masters.
Here in the US Open, the Frenchman started on a superb note with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Federico Coria of Argentina. Monfils’ stats from that match include winning 93% of his first service points while striking 29 winners to Coria’s 8.
Monfils has a good track record at the Flushing Meadows, comprising three quarterfinal appearances and one semifinal run in 2016.

Johnson Looking to Build on Doubles Success
Steve Johnson arrived for the US Open following a runner-up doubles feat in the Cincinnati Masters with Austin Krajicek. In July, he delivered a similar performance in the Atlanta Open, this time with Jordan Thompson.
World No. 87 will now look to build on it and hope to emulate something similar on the singles circuit. It is, of course, easier said than done, especially going by his first-round slogfest in New York.
The 31-year-old met Maximilian Marterer in the opener and battled the German for a little over three hours to take the match 5-7, 7-6(8), 7-6(8), 6-3. This win also marks the first time since the Washington Open (a quarterfinalist there) that Johnson has reached the second round on the ATP Tour.
It is fair to say that Johnson hasn’t fared that well on the singles circuit in 2021 but given that Monfils is slowly finding his groove, he will more than fancy his chances of upsetting the number 17 seed.
Monfils v Johnson Prediction and Tip
Monfils will start as the favourite but there is a very real possibility that the match may turn into a marathon affair. Expect the Frenchman to ultimately prevail.
