Osaka Gets a Second Round Walkover

The defending champion didn’t have to take the court for her second round match after her opponent, qualifier Olga Danilovic pulled out an hour before the scheduled start of the match due to a medical issue.

Osaka, who had started the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Marie Bouzkova, will now be meeting the feisty Leylah Fernandez in the next round.

In her first round match, the third seed had struck 34 winners to 23 unforced errors. She was also good on her serve winning 81% points on the first serve and saved all eight of the break points that she faced. She also converted three of the breaking chances in the match to sail into the second round.

The Australian Open champion, who pulled out of the French Open with mental health issues, has struggled on return, falling in the Round of 16 at the Olympics and the Cincinnati Open. But New York is one place that brings the best out of her. The Japanese won her maiden Grand Slam title by beating Serena Williams in the 2018 final and then added another by beating Victoria Azarenka in the final last year.

Fernandez Holds Off Kanepi

The 18-year-old battled past Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi in a close to two-hour contest, sealing the match 7-5, 7-5 and advancing to the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time.

Fernandez fended off four break points in the first set before getting the only break in the 12th game to seal the set. In the second, the Canadian lost serve in the very first game and then was under immense pressure having to save two set points on her serve at 3-5. She managed to hold to extend the set, and then prevented the Estonian from serving out the set, saving two more set points.

Back in the contest, Fernandez held serve the next game and then broke Kanepi once again to advance to the next round.

Ranked no. 73rd in the world, Fernandez had defeated Croatia’s Ana Konjuh 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the first round on Monday, converting four of seven break points while saving eight of 10.

The last two years have been pretty good for the World No. 73. She was a finalist in Acapulco last year and won the title in Monterrey this year. She won’t be the favourite to advance to the fourth round, but will surely not go down without a fight.

Osaka v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

Beating Osaka on a hard court major is a monumental challenge. For someone as young and less experienced as Fernandez the challenge may even be greater. Expect her to put up a fight, but Osaka should progress with a straight sets win.
