Oscar Otte v Andreas Seppi Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 28-year old German, and the Italian, who is nine years older.

Qualifier Otte is now in unchartered territory.

The German is not only playing in his first US Open, but he is now into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, going one stage further than he managed at Wimbledon two months ago, and the French Open in 2019.

Ott had already produced one surprise by beating the number 20 seed, and world number 23, Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, in four sets in the first round, and he produced another minor upset by defeating the experienced American Denis Kudla on Thursday.

It was Kudla who began the stronger, forcing the first service break, but Otte hit back with two breaks of his own to take the first set.

The second set remained on serve, until the American serving to stay in it, offered up two break opportunities to the German, the second of which he took.

Otte then reinforced his control with another break early in the third set. Once more break gave him the match in a little over two hours.

Seppi Saves Match Points and Then Produces Upset

This is the third time in his long career that Seppi has made the third round of the US Open, although it has been six years since he last featured at this stage of the tournament.

The 37-year old needed all his reserves of energy and strength to beat Maron Fucsovics of Hungary in the first round, the world number 41, in a  five set battle which saw the Hungarian come back from two sets down. Only for Seppi to just edge it in marathon fifth set tie-break, the Italian saving five match points against him in the course of it..

That match might have been expected to take a lot out of him, but he had sufficiently recovr4ed by Thursday to produce one of the upsets of the second round, knocking out the Polish number 10 seed Hubert Hurkasz.

That was despite Hurkasz taking the first set, courtesy of two dropped service games from the Italian.

Seppi though broke early in the second set and defended that lead to level the match.

An early break put him ahead in the third set, and, although Hurkasz got that back, he immediately dropped his serve again, and Seppi was in the driving seat.

And he looked to have one foot in the third round when he broke Hurkasz again at the start of the fourth set. The Pole though, hit back with a break of his own, and it went to a tie-break.

Seppi proved the stronger of the pair and sealed the win with his first match point.

Otte v Seppi Prediction and Tip

Provided that he is recovered sufficiently from his exertions this week, Seppi will begin the favourite to make the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his long career, using all his experience and know-how to steer past the German qualifier.
