Bencic Battles Past Swiatek

The Olympic gold medalist edged out seventh seed Iga Swiatek to advance to the quarterfinal of the U.S. Open for a third time in her career. Just like the previous three rounds, the Swiss didn’t lose a set, but had to work really hard for this win, which included a one-hour-and-24-minute first set.

Beginning the match by breaking the Pole’s serve, Bencic held on to the lead over the next eight games to serve for the set at 5-4. However, Swiatek had other intentions, breaking Bencic just in time to keep the set alive.

Serving at 5-6, Bencic fended off a set point at 30-40 to force the tiebreak, which turned out to be the longest of the tournament in terms of points played.

The World No. 12 saved three more set points, before converting her fifth to take the tiebreak 14-12. In the second, Bencic got a break in the fourth game and held on to that advantage till the end to close out the two-hour-and-seven minute encounter 7-6 (14-12), 6-3.

Outplayed by Swiatek at the Adelaide final, their only previous meeting, Bencic got her revenge in fitting style. A quarterfinalist in Cincinnati, Bencic had reached another final this year, in Berlin, but just like Adelaide, she faltered at the last hurdle.

The Swiss didn’t face a break point in her first round win over Arantxa Rus, and has been broken just once in the next three rounds against Martina Trevisan, Jessica Pegula and Swiatek respectively. She faces the 18-year-old sensation next and would be ready for another gruelling duel.

Raducanu Routs Rogers

There was the Shelby Rogers that turned the tables on the World No. 1 Ash Barty in the most emphatic victories of the tournament and then there was the Rogers who just couldn’t match the firepower of Britain’s Emma Raducanu in the fourth round.

The 18-year-old Brit converted five of nine break points, struck 18 winners and made just 14 unforced errors to knock out the World No. 43, 6-2, 6-1 and keep her fairy tale going.

Having burst into the scene with three straight set wins on her Grand Slam debut at the Wimbledon this year, Raducanu has gone a step ahead at the U.S. Open.

She is undefeated in the last seven matches, which includes the three qualifying rounds for the tournament. And if one were to include the WTA 125 event in Chicago last month, Raducanu has lost just once in her previous 12 matches and that defeat came in the hands of Clara Tauson in the WTA 125 final.

Making a main draw debut at the New York major, Raducanu has been decimating her opponents. She ousted Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-4 in the second and Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-0, 6-1 in the third.

She was ruthless against Rogers as well, preventing the American from getting into any sort of rhythm despite getting off to a 0-2 start in the first set. Hitting back, the World No. 150 won the next six games in a row to draw first blood.

Raducanu continued her ascendency in the second as well, taking a 5-0 lead before Rogers finally won a game after losing 11 in a row. Her joy didn’t last long though as Raducanu sealed the contest in the very next game, converting her fourth match point.

Bencic v Raducanu Prediction and Tip

On papers, it looks so lopsided: the World No. 12 pitted against World No. 150. But, in reality, the latter has had such an impact in this tournament that there are growing expectations from her to cause another upset. Beating the Olympics champion won’t be easy though. But Bencic can’t take her opponent lightly.

Three sets look imminent with Bencic expected to end the fairy tale.
