Errani, Former Champion in Portoroz

After a 10-year hiatus, the WTA Slovenian Open will return to our screens this week. And in the 32-woman field will be the former champion Sara Errani of Italy.

Errani, a former world no. 5 won this tournament which was categorized as an International event before its rebranding to a WTA 250 back in 2008. She would also finish runner-up in the forthcoming year to Russia’s Dinara Safina.

It was also the first time Errani tasted success on hard courts in singles competition. And her success over 10 years ago in these parts represents just one of three titles won on the surface.

Errani arrives in Portoroz on the back of a first-round exit at the US Open where she lost Ekaterina Alexandrova. Overall, her hard court record this year leaves a lot to be desired. She is 6-9 for the year, and considering three of those wins came in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open, she is not in great shape ahead of her first-round match against Kalinina.

Kalinina Enjoys Remarkable Rise

Anhelina Kalinina has enjoyed a hushed-up rise in the past few months. After tearing it up on the ITF tour with back-to-back titles in Montpellier and Contrexeville, she reached her first WTA final in Budapest in the middle of July.

Kalinina was ranked as low as world no. 125 before she established a 14-match winning streak just after Wimbledon. She climbed to a career-high ranking of no. 80 and soon to no.75.

The Ukrainian who plays an assured game from the baseline,  backed with her ability to stay composed in the clutch moments, hasn’t had it plain sailing on the American hard courts. She went 1-4 at three tournaments, winning her only match at the US Open when she beat Mayar Sherif in the first round.

Kalinina will be making her debut on Monday, and will be seeking what would be her fifth win on hard courts in 2021.

Errani v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Neither player made encouraging runs on hard courts in recent weeks, but Kalinina has undoubtedly been the better player this year and that should reflect in the scoreline.

Tip: Kalinina to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
