Jasmine Paolini v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

87th-ranked Paolini will meet 145th-ranked Kalinskaya for the first time.

Paolini Advances After Yastremska Retires

Jasmine Paolini advanced safely into the second round in Portoroz after her opponent Dayana Yastremska was forced to retire due to a back problem.

Paolini was leading 7-6 4-1, when the sixth-seeded Ukrainian’s body gave up. Beforehand, Yastremska appeared in total control when she took an unassailable 5-2 lead in the first set.

Paolini’s troubles particularly on serve nearly cost her the opening set. But the Italian found some composure and a little bit of luck to swing the match in her favor. She saved three set points to force a tiebreak which she dominated in its entirety.

In the second set, Yastremska’s movement was hampered and she was unable to find her range on serve due to a back problem. And after getting broken three times, and failing to win a single point behind her second serve, the world no. 53 could not continue.

Paolini joins fellow countrywoman Lucia Bronzetti in the second round, after she also dismissed a seeded player in the form of Rebecca Peterson.

Kalinskaya Breezes Past Kovinic

After her doubles win on Tuesday alongside Mihaela Buzarnescu, Anna Kalinskaya emulated her success in a singles court less than 24 hours later.

The Russian world no. 145 defeated Danka Kovinic 6-0 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes. The Montenegrin was in abysmal form after losing her last six matches without mastering a single set in the process. And on Wednesday there were little signs that would change on the face of the confident Russian.

Kalinskaya had reached the quarterfinals at the Leiria ITF a few days ago and was certainly the more assured of the two players from baseline exchanges.

Kovinic lost eight straight games before she was finally on the board, but it was too little too late as Kalinskaya converted five of 10 breakpoints to cruise into the Round of 16.

Paolini v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Jasmine Paolini cannot afford another slow start in this one. Needless to say, her serve continues to be a real area of weakness. Kalinskaya, who is healthy and in better shape on this surface should exploit it and with that a place in the quarterfinals.
