Yulia Putintseva v Katie Boulter Head to Head

Putintseva won the pair’s only meeting in a singles rubber at the 2019 Fed Cup. The match was decided in a third set tiebreak which went the Kazakh’s way.

Putintseva Sails Past Cristian

Yulia Putintseva, the number two seed, booked her place in the second round with a comfortable 6-4 6-4 win over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian.

Putintseva had suffered a demoralizing first-round defeat to Kaia Kanepi at the US Open. That early exit meant that she moved down 11 spots in the rankings (now world no. 44) after losing a huge chunk of quarterfinal points from the last US Open.

The Kazakh, however, put disappointment to one side and bounced back with a routine win over Cristian. She dug out a gutsy hold in the second game from 0-40 down, and went on to break Cristian’s serve twice in the first set. Despite the Romanian restoring one break back, Putintseva’s insurance break was enough to help her establish a one-set lead.

The second set was tight, with both players reading each other’s serve extremely well. Putintseva secured the decisive break of serve in game seven, and kept consolidating for two more service games to advance into the Round of 16.

Brave Boulter Progresses

Katie Boulter may have less of the wider audience from the UK watching her at a low-key tournament in Slovenia, but she has not lost a step in reaching the Round of 16.

The world no. 171 passed two qualifying rounds to reach the main draw where she took down Ukraine’s Katarina Zavatska, winning 7-5 6-3. Victory on Tuesday also means that she has not dropped a set in three matches, and will certainly be an acid test for the second-seeded Putintseva.

As injuries continue to halt Boulter’s charge, 2021 has proven to be her most productive season at tour level. Her straight-sets win over Zavatska was her ninth main draw win of the season –  the most that she has managed in a single season.

Three of those nine wins came on the grass courts of Nottingham where she advanced into the second quarterfinal of her career.

Putintseva v Boulter Prediction and Tip

Boulter’s bold and accurate hitting could worry Putintseva. The Brit took a set from the Kazakh the last time they met. And despite being ranked nearly 150 spots below Putintseva, Boulter is certainly capable of playing better tennis than what her ranking suggests if she can maintain a decent spell of good health.
