Cirstea Edges Out Martincova

Building on what has been a year of resurgence, Sorana Cirstea reached a fourth quarterfinal of the season on Thursday with a straight sets win over Tereza Martincova.

The Romanian, seeded fourth in the tournament, saved 14 of 16 break points and capitalised on five of six opportunities to break the Czech’s serve to win the one-hour-and-33-minute second round contest 7-5, 6-2.

The world no. 40 had begun the tournament with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 win over Heather Watson in the first round.

Things weren’t that simple against Martincova, who raced to a 0-3 lead in the first set and had a set point on Cirstea’s serve at 2-5 (30-40). The Romanian, however, saved the set point and then prevented the Czech from serving out the set in the next game, breaking her to 15. Having got into a good rhythm, Cirstea won the next three games, as well, to wrap up the first set.

She dominated the second with three breaks of serve against one from Martincova, but found it really difficult to close out the final game, needing to save seven break points before converting her second match point to edge through.

Cirstea, who won her second WTA title and a first since 2008 in Istanbul this year, was also a finalist in Strasbourg and a quarterfinalist at the Grampians Trophy. Thursday’s win improved the 31-year-old to 23-15 this season.

Paolini Eliminates Kalinskaya

Jasmine Paolini reached a first senior quarterfinal this year as she knocked out Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Broken once in the match, the Italian converted half of eight break points to beat Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 30 minutes.

Paolini has featured in two WTA 125 finals this year, winning the title in Bol, Croatia and finishing runner-up in Saint Malo, France. Both of those tournament were clay-court events.

The 25-year-old is now making an impression on hard courts. She reached the second rounds at the Chicago and U.S. Opens and has won two in a row in Luxembourg to reach the last eight.

Paolini had begun her campaign with a win over Dayana Yastremska. She was leading the opening round contest 7-6 (7-5), 4-1 when the Ukrainian retired.

On Friday, she will be aiming to win a first quarterfinal at the senior level.
