Cristian Garin v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head

World No. 17 Cristian Garin has never faced off against Basilashvili before this.

Garin Fails To Inspire Chile In Davis Cup

Cristian Garin’s season hasn’t fully clicked into gear despite capturing a fifth career title in Santiago and reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time. That is because he has been part of some incomprehensible defeats this season.

A case in point was his latest loss to a player ranked nearly 100 spots below him in the ATP rankings. The Chilean failed to inspire his country into the qualifiers of the Davis Cup. Chile suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Slovakia in Bratislava in the World Group.

Garin was beaten by Gombos in just under an hour in routine fashion, 6-0 6-1. And considering that the World No. 17 had gotten the better of his opponent a few weeks earlier in the US Open first round, the result in Bratislava was greeted with widespread astonishment.

Garin has compiled a 20-16 record for the season but has a solitary win on hard courts in 2021. Can he append another in San Diego on Monday?

Basilashvili Makes Metz Quarters

Few players in the world can match Nikoloz Basilashvili shot for shot. When the Georgian’s game is firing on all cylinders, he is a joy to watch. But there are two sides to the Basilashvili coin, he is prone to throw in the towel occasionally.

Ranked 36 in the world, which is precisely 20 spots down from his career-high ranking of World No. 16, Basilashvili will make his third trip to the US this season to compete at the low-key ATP 250 event in San Diego.

In his previous four tournaments this season in North America (which includes the Miami Open, Toronto Masters, Cincinnati, and the US Open) he has posted a 4-2 record. He achieved a respectable third-round showing in New York courtesy of a retirement by Sebastian Korda, and a completed win over the big-serving Maxime Cressy.

Although he fell short in his bid towards knocking out Reilly Opelka, Basilashvili is aiming to end the season on a high note after reaching the quarterfinals of the Moselle Open last weekend.

Garin v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip

Basilashvili is one of the finest shotmakers in the world although he remains as unpredictable as they come. But given Garin’s lack of momentum coupled with his shock defeat to Gombos, we are backing the Georgian to come out on top here.
