Munar Prefers to Play on Clay

Munar reached his first senior doubles final in Santiago in March, losing the Chile Open with partner Federico Delbonis. And then the following month on home soil in Andalucía, he made his maiden singles final, only to go down in three sets to compatriot Pablo Carreno-Busta

Prior to that he had also made three finals this year on the Challenger tour, all of them on clay. He won in Antalya and finished runner-up in Antalya again and in Marbella.

Away from clay, success has been harder to come by for the Spaniard. He lost his two matches in grass, including a first round defeat at Wimbledon, failed to qualify for Winston Salem and lost in the opening round of the US Open.

Last week at the Astana Open in Nur-Sultan, he won his opening match against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, but then, lost to defending champion John Millman in a tight three set contest that lasted more than three hours.

Moselle Quarter-Finalist Giron

Like Munar, Giron is still looking for success on the senior tour, and he is yet to make a  final, although his form was good enough, after several high profile withdrawals, to earn selection for then US Olympic team this summer.

He reached the second round in Tokyo, before losing to the local favourite, Kei Nishikori.

Back in North America, he reached the second round in Washington, failed to qualify in Toronto, and suffered an opening round defeat in Cincinnati.

However, he did much better in Winston-Salem, getting to the quarter-finals, before losing to the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

He would have been hoping for a good run at his home Grand Slam after that but was stopped I n his tracks at the US Open by Dan Evans in the second round.

Laat week in Metz, he beat Arthur Rindrknech of France, and then had a big win over Alex de Minaur, the world 21, but hopes of progressing beyond the quarter-final were ended by Peter Gojowczyk of Germany.

Munar v Giron Prediction and Tip

Playing on a hard indoor court gives Giron an innate advantage over Munar, who is happier on clay. Giron will want to build on his quarter-final at the Moselle Open, and should make a winning start in Sofia.
