Pegula’s Solid Year of Progress on Tour

Pegula has been in three senior WTA career finals and won the Washington Open in 2019.

She began the year strongly, reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open, where Elina Svitolina was among the women she beat.

That enabled her to the enter the top 50 for the first time  and she has made further progress since then, based on s string of good results, including reaching the semi-final of the Qatar Open as a qualifier, and quarter-final appearances in Dubai, Rome,  and Berlin. ‘

And, in Montreal she went one better and got to another semi-final, before losing to Ons Jabeur.

In the midst of that sequence her form was good enough to earn her selection for the Olympics, but she was beaten in the final round by the eventual gold medal winner Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

And it was Bencic who ended her participation at the US Open as well, the last tournament she played, beating her in straight sets at the third round stage.

Polish Number Three Frech

Frech is the Polish number three behind Iga Świątek and Magda Linette, but far less well known than the other two, mainly because she spends most of her time on the junior tours.

She has won two recent tournaments, clinching the 125k Series title, the Thoreau Open in the USA in August on hard courts, and earlier this month, a clay court title in Prague.

Her appearances on the main tour are rarer, and she usually has to rely on wildcards or mist battle through qualifying first to earn her chance.

That is exactly what she done in Chicago. Beating two Americans in order to meet a third in the form of Pegula. First she defeated Alexa Gltach, and then the veteran Bethanie Mattek-Sands, both in straight sets.
