Kateryna Kozlova had to take the longer route to the main draw in the WTA 500 Chicago. Starting as a qualifier, she first defeated Nichole Melichar and later, Priscilla Hon to book the clash with Kostyuk.
It has been an uneventful season so far for the 27-year-old Ukrainian, which is also the reason why she is ranked World No. 140 at the moment. Expect for a handful of tournaments, Kozlova has succumbed right in the early/qualifying rounds – be it an ITF event or a WTA one.
Her best performances include reaching the third round in the WTA Nottingham, the quarterfinal in WTA Budapest and later, the semifinal at the WTA Gdynia.
Most recently, Kozlova featured in the US Open where she lost in the first qualifying match to Cristina Bucsa.

Kostyuk, Enjoying her Career-Best Season
Marta Kostyuk started the year as World No. 99 – the fact that she is now ranked #57 says all there is to know about the progress she has made on the tour this season.
Even though her form of late hasn’t been particularly impressive, the 19-year-old Kostyuk, on the whole, has done well to establish herself as one of the rising stars on the circuit. Earlier in the year, she was a semifinalist at the WTA Abu Dhabi and later, reached the same stage in the Istanbul Cup.
A few weeks later, Kostyuk posted her best Grand Slam results by reaching the fourth round at the French Open while in more recent weeks, her exploits entail a quarterfinal appearance in the WTA 250 Chicago Women’s Open.

Kostyuk will start as the favourite on account of her recent momentum but let’s not forget that she is still years behind when it comes to experience.
