Anisimova Seeking Consistency

Anisimova arrives in Chicago with a 15-14 W/L record for the year, with 9 of these wins coming on the hard courts. The American currently sits 82nd in the live rankings, far off her career-high of 21 in October 2019.

She has struggled to string together consistently impressive performances throughout the year and has failed to make it past the quarterfinal stage throughout 2021.

The 20-year-old has managed to reach the last 8 in Parma and Bad Homburg. In Parma, Anisimova sailed into the quarters without dropping a set, seeing off Paolini 6-2 6-1 in the opening round and then backing this up by beating Schmiedlova 6-2 6-4 in the last 16. Anisimova fell 6-3 6-3 to Gauff in the last 8 to end her run.

In Bad Homburg, Anisimova once again made it to the last 8 without dropping a set. Along the way she defeated Kovinic 6-2 6-1 and then Petkovic 6-1 7-5 to reach the last 8. The American lost to eventual champion Kerber 2-6 6-3 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Chicago is Anisimova’s first tournament since the US Open where she made the 2nd round, defeating Diyas 7-5 6-2 in her opener and then narrowly losing out to Pliskova 7-5 6-7(5) 7-6(7) in an epic battle with the home round behind her.

Golubic Has Done a Lot of Winning

Golubic has played a lot of tennis and done a lot of winning this year, as she currently holds a 45-18 W/L ratio for the year on the WTA and ITF circuit. The Swiss currently holds 8 ITF titles, adding two to her name this year in Grenoble and Malo.

Grenoble saw Golubic lift the trophy by fending off Tan, Rosatello, Martincova, and Benoit, before defeating Zanevska in the final 6-1 4-6 7-6(2) to secure the silverware.

In Malo, the 28-year-old successfully defeated Burel, Minnen, Sasnovich, and Tan, before beating Paolini in the final 6-1 6-3 to add another title to 2021’s accomplishments.

Golubic’s stand-out result for the year is reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, defeating impressive opponents such as Kudermetova, Collins, Brengle, and Keys, before losing to eventual finalist Pliskova 6-2 6-2 in the last 8.

Golubic will have her chances against Anisimova, especially if the American is not firing on all cylinders, a win would secure her place in the second round against top seed Svitolina.

Anisimova v Golubic Prediction and Tip

It is likely that Anisimova will encounter a tough battle as she tries to reach the second round of Chicago, however, her powerful groundstrokes and clean ball striking should be enough to see her across the line.
