Azarenka Ousts Zhang

Victoria Azarenka is off to a blazing start here in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic as she defeated Shuai Zhang in straight sets in the opener. Needing just an hour and two minutes, the Belarusian, in her clinical sense, dispatched the Chinese with 6-2, 6-1 converting seven out of nine breakpoints in the process.

Currently ranked World No. 34, her last tournament was in the US Open where she reached the third round, losing to Garbine Muguruza. In WTA Montreal, Azarenka enjoyed a similar run where she made it as far as the quarterfinal before succumbing to Aryna Sabalenka.

The 32-year-old hasn’t won a singles title this season at all, last winning the same in the Cincinnati Open 2020. The closest she has come to is by reaching the semifinal in WTA Doha and the Bett1Open. Azarenka also made it to the fourth round in the Miami Open and French Open to highlight the instances where she earned the most ranking points.

Baptiste, with a Positive Start

19-year-old Hailey Baptiste started her campaign in Chicago with an impressive, straight-set win over the Italian Jasmine Paolini. The current World No. 174, who starting in the competition with a wildcard, defeated the recent winner of WTA Portoroz with 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 43 minutes.

It was a well-deserved victory by the American, who now seeks to overcome Azarenka in round two and deliver her best performance on the WTA Tour. So far this year, her best results have come in the French Open where, as a qualifier, she made it to round two before bowing down to Sofia Kenin.

Baptiste has also featured in a couple of ITF events but didn’t have much luck there. With the exception of a handful of tournaments where she reached the quarters and semis, the American has had a muted spell, on the whole, this season.

Her last stint was in Columbus in the WTA125K series event where she was beaten in round two by Nuria Parrizas Dias.

Azarenka v Baptiste Prediction & Tip

Azarenka is light years ahead in terms of experience and form, giving her a clear edge over the 19-year-old.
