Belinda Bencic v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

The only time they met was at the Olympics semifinal this year and Bencic won that contest in a thrilling three-setter.

Bencic Knocks Out Martincova

Belinda Bencic moved into a sixth consecutive quarterfinal with a straight sets win over the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova in the Round of 16 in Chicago on Thursday.

Since going all the way to winning the gold at the Olympics, Bencic reached the last eight at the Cincinnati Open, the U.S. Open, the Luxembourg Open and the Ostrava Open. Interestingly though she couldn’t reach the final four in the last four tournaments.

Overall, this will be a ninth quarterfinal appearance of the season for the Swiss, who was a runner-up in Adelaide and Berlin this year.

The World No. 12 had begun her Chicago campaign with a come-from-behind victory over Australia’s Maddison Inglis. The Swiss lost the first set but allowed the Aussie to win just one game in the next two sets to win 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 in two hours and 10 minutes.

On Thursday, Bencic needed an hour and 41 minutes to beat Martincova 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the Round of 16.

On Friday, she will be looking to reach a fourth semifinal this season.

Rybakina Battles Past Kudermetova

Elena Rybakina battled past Russia’s Veronica Kudermetova in the Round of 16 on Thursday to reach a seventh quarterfinal of the season.

The fifth seed Kazakh needed exactly two hours to beat the World No. 31, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

Rybakina had begun her Chicago Open challenge with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The Kazakh, who reached five WTA finals last year, has not reached a single final this season. The World No. 17’s biggest drawback has been her inability to hold nerves in close three-setters. Bencic, too, defeated her in three sets at the Olympics semifinal, while recently she was dumped out of the U.S. Open by Simona Halep in a nerve-wracking Round of 32 contest.

Bencic v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Rybakina’s continued failure in close three-setters against top players is becoming a problem and she will be under pressure against Bencic if the match goes the distance. The Kazakh’s best chance to get her Olympics revenge will be to win in straight sets, but if it goes to three, Bencic should emerge victorious.

With both in good form, expect a third set in the contest with Bencic going through.
