Second seed Garbine Muguruza advanced to the quarterfinal of the Chicago Open after her Round of 16 opponent Victoria Azarenka withdrew without taking the court.
The World No. 9 had begun her campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the United States’ Ann Li in the Round of 32.
The second seed, who won the Dubai Open title earlier this year and also reached the finals of the Yarra Valley Classic and the Qatar Open, will be featuring in a sixth quarterfinal of the season on Friday and a first since the Olympics.
The 27-year-old is 35-14 this season, but her recent form hasn’t been too great, she had come into the tournament with a 4-4 record from her last eight matches, which included a run to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open before she was sent packing by Barbora Krejcikova.
The eight-time WTA champion will be aiming to reach a fourth semifinal on Friday.

Hontama Stuns Rogers
World No. 200 Mai Hontama, making her main draw debut on the tour, stunned Shelby Rogers on Thursday to book a spot in the quarterfinals.
It’s been a terrific week for the Japanese who came into the main draw through the qualifiers. She defeated the United States’ Emina Bektas in straight sets in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Britain’s Harriet Dart in the second qualifying round.
Hontama continued her winning run in the main draw with a stunning 6-3, 6-0 victory over former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia. She got lucky in the second round after the 11th seed Annett Kontaveit withdrew from their contest.
Hontama pulled off another shock defeat on Thursday, defeating Rogers, who had eliminated the eighth seed Bianca Andreescu in the previous round.
The Japanese won the first set against the American, but was outplayed in the second set tiebreak, however she recovered in the third set to win the two-hour-and-23-minute contest 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1. Can the 22-year-old keep the dream run going?
Muguruza v Hontama Prediction and Tip
It’s been an impressive performance from Hontama so far, but beating Muguruza will be a huge ask. Expect the Spaniard to win in straight sets advance to the semifinal.
