Halep, Seeking Her Way Back to Top 10

In what has been an injury-stricken season for Simona Halep (right shoulder, calf, and right adductor at separate points in the season), the Romanian, as a result, could not play to her fullest abilities.

Halep started the year on a promising note by reaching the last eight in the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open but after that, her luck took a turn. From March through to May, the former number 11 seed featured in only four tournaments – and her best results there came in the Stuttgart Open where she was a semifinalist.

The 30-year-old was also forced to miss the French Open and Wimbledon (where she was the defending champion) due to her ailments and consequently fell out of the top 10 for the first time since January 2014.

Halep finally returned to the tour in the US Open swing, starting with underwhelming performances in the Cincinnati Open and Rogers Cup before reaching the fourth round in New York.

The three-time Grand Slam runner-up boasts a decent pedigree in the Californian city – she won the Indian Wells title in 2015 and has also reached the semifinal twice.

Kostyuk Survives Zhang

19-year-old Marta Kostyuk will be pleased with her performance in the Indian Wells opener, defeating the Chinese No. 1 Shuai Zhang 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Even though the Ukrainian is still seeking her maiden WTA singles title, she is not a player to be taken lightly. She has eight ITF finals to her name and has moved some 40 odd places in the ranking since the start of the season.

Kostyuk’s key moments include semifinal runs in WTA Abu Dhabi and Istanbul, and a fourth-round stint in the French Open where she upset Garbine Muguruza in the opener. In more recent weeks, however, her form has dwindled slightly as she incurred back to back first-round losses in the US Open and WTA 500 Chicago.

Needless to mention, consistency is not her strong suit but she is a promising player more than capable of punching above her weight.

Halep v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Halep will start as the favourite but in all fairness, the match can swing either way. She may not be as sharp as she was before the injuries while Kostyuk, having just carved an upset by defeating a player who is way more experienced, is bubbling with confidence.

Expect an entertaining game of tennis where both players will push each other to the limits.
