Sebastian Korda v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in New York three years ago, Tiafoe winning in three sets on an indoor hard court.

Korda Making his Indian Wells’ Debut

Korda has already booked his place in the Nextgen ATP Finals for the best young players on tour, an event in which Tiafoe has previously appeared.

And, to a certain extent, he has inherited his mantle as the next big hope for American’s men’s tennis, although Tiafoe is only two years older.

The 21-year old began the year by reaching his first senior final in Delray Beach and, although he lost on that occasion, he did triumph in Emilio-Romagna on clay in May.

This is his first time in Indian Wells, although he did crown his maiden visit to Miami in March with a  quarter-fianl appearance.

At Wimbledon he reached the fourth-round, emulating his achievement by reaching the same stage at Roland Garros last year. He would have been hoping to go deep into  his home Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows as well, but was beaten in the first round.

Korda made his reappearance on tour in San Diego last week, but was beaten in the second round by the Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

He was handed a first round bye.

Tiafoe Overcomes Paire Challenge

Tiafoe won a Challenger title on grass in June at Nottingham, his first since triumphing on the clay of Parma last year.

It has been more than three years since he first burst on the scene by winning the Delray Beach Open and finishing runner-up in Estoril a few months later, and it is hard to escape the feeling that he has not yet realised the early potential he showed.

Still there have been signs that 2022 could be better for him, if he carries on the form that saw him reach the fourth round of the US Open this year, and the same stage of the Miami Masters as well.

He was given a tricky looking first round draw in the shale of Benoît Paire, but deal with the challenge of the maverick Frenchman easily enough.

He began the match well, breaking Paire in the opening games of the match, but a sequence of three games against serve left the two men level once more. However, Tiafoe then broke the world number 50 to love, and served out for the set from there.

The second set began with Paire dropping his serve once more, and that proved to be decisive. The match was dominated by serve from there on, neither man could create a break point there, and Tiafoe was able to close out the match.

Korda v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

This may be a close battle between the two Americans. Tiafoe won their previous encounter, but Korda is a much improved player since then. It may in the end come down to experience – Tiafoe has played at Indian Wells four times before, whilst Korda is making hs debut.
