Rublev Looking to Impress

Stunned by Cameron Norrie in the semifinal of the San Diego Open last week, Andrey Rublev will begin his campaign at Indian Wells on Saturday.

He hasn’t quite had the same impact that he had last season, when he won won all five of his ATP finals, but a 46-16 record in 2021 so far is still extremely impressive and that includes runs to four finals. However, Rublev has added just one title to his previous seven this year, winning in Rotterdam by beating Marton Fucsovics in the final.

The 23-year-old is 30-9 on hard courts this year and is 9-3 from the last four tournaments, which includes a runner-up finish in Cincinnati, a third-round exit from the U.S. Open and a semifinal finish in San Diego.

Also a finalist in Monte-Carlo and Halle this year, Rublev will be looking to make another deep push at Indian Wells.

Taberner Starts With a Win

Facing Rublev in the second round will be Spain’s Carlos Taberner who knocked out compatriot Jaume Munar in the first round on Thursday.

The 116th-ranked Spaniard broke Munar thrice in the first set and twice in the second, while getting broken once in each set to win the contest 6-3, 6-3.

Taberner was in the quarterfinals of the Astana Open last month. He defeated Ricardas Berankis and Egor Gerasimov in the first two rounds but fell to Alexander Bubik in the last eight stage.

While stats suggest that Taberner is a solid clay court player, the 24-year-old is slowly beginning to make an impact on hard surfaces as well.

Overall, Taberner improved to 6-7 this year and 3-2 on hard courts.

He has spent more time at the Challenger tournaments this season, winning two titles, in Antalya and Aix-en-Provence, and also reaching two other semifinals.
