Svitolina v Cirstea Head to Head

Svitolina has won both their previous meetings, winning at the French Open in 2016 and at Istanbul in 2017.

Svitolina Sends Martincova Packing

Elina Svitolina began her campaign in style knocking out the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova in the second round on Friday.

Dominating the first set, the Ukrainian didn’t face a single break point and dropped just five points on her serve. Breaking Martincova twice, Svitolina wrapped up the first set in less than 30 minutes. However, the Czech made things difficult for the World No. 7 in the second set with both players trading two breaks each in the first eight games. But eventually, the Ukrainian got the decisive third break in the later stages to surge ahead for a 6-2, 7-5 win in 68 minutes.

The win was Svitolina’s 40th of the season as she improved to 40-18. The Chicago Open champion has been playing particularly well on hard courts, where she has a 30-11 record this season.

The Olympic bronze medallist had reached the semifinals at Indian Wells in 2019 before going down to Bianca Andreescu.

The former World No. 3’s notable performances this season include a 16th career title in Chicago and semifinal finishes at the Miami Open and Stuttgart Open with Ash Barty ending her run in both those tournaments.

Cirstea Dumps Out Doi

World No. 40 Sorana Cirstea is off to a flying start with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Japan’s Misaki Doi.

The Romanian converted all four of the break points that she held in the match, as she eased past the Japanese in just 64 minutes. Cirstea dropped just four points on the first serve and four on the second, while breaking Doi twice to clinch the first set with ease.

Doi broke the 32nd seed in the very first game of the second set, but Cirstea rebounded with a break in the sixth game and then edged ahead with a second break to clinch the contest. Just like the first set, Cirstea dropped just four points on her first delivery in the second set and just four on the back of her second serve.

The Romanian, who was in terrific form on clay earlier this year, has struggled to maintain the same level on other surfaces.

Since Wimbledon, Cirstea had played 10 matches before the start of the tournament, all on hard courts, but had won just four of those matches, reaching a quarterfinal at the Slovenian Open.

Cirstea picked her second WTA title and a first since 2008, by winning the Istanbul Open this year. She was also a runner-up in Strasbourg and reached the Round of 16 at Roland Garros. Overall, the Romanian had brought in a 23-17 season record to Indian Wells, where she is making her ninth appearance. It’s only the second time that she is into the third round of the tournament.

Svitolina v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Svitolina has been in terrific form over the last few tournaments, in contrast Cirstea’s form has been dodgy. Expect the Ukrainian to keep marching forward with another win over Cirstea.
