World No. 25 Danielle Collins is starting her campaign in the Indian Wells Open with a win-loss tally of 34-13 and a bye into the second round.
She has won two singles titles this year, with the most recent one coming in the WTA San Jose Open in August – this title was preceded by the winner’s trophy at the Palermo Open.
Since then, Collins has reached the third round at the Canadian Open and US Open, and the quarterfinal at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic. By all means, the 27-year-old American has had a brilliant season as she looks to build on it further. She has been impressive on hard courts, also evident from her deep runs in the Yarra Valley Classic and Phillip Island Trophy.
In the Indian Wells Open, Collins has reached the fourth round and third round in successive seasons.

Davis Overcomes Diaz
Lauren Davis, who happens to be the current world number 97, kickstarted her Indian Wells campaign with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nuria Párrizas Díaz.
She now faces a formidable opponent in Collins and needless to mention, has the work cut out for her. Davis’s season so far has been largely underwhelming, barring a few instances where she reached the penultimate rounds. The 28-year-old was a quarterfinalist in WTA Guadalajara and a semifinalist in WTA Nottingham.
In addition to this, Davis had a couple of deep runs in WTA 125K events in Charleston and most recently, Columbus. That said, the fact remains that she lacks form at the moment and given her lack of positive results against the top players, overcoming someone of Collins’ stature will be a challenging task.
