Berrettini Wins For the First Time at Indian Wells

Following two first-round exits in his only two Indian Wells appearances in 2018 and 2019, Matteo Berrettini finally registered his first win in the tournament on Sunday as the Italian knocked out Chilean qualifier Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets.

The world No. 7 served 11 aces, struck 24 winners to 22 from Tabilo and made just 11 unforced errors against the Chilean’s 22 to win the one hour and 31 minute contest 6-4, 7-5.

While Berrettini saved both the break points that he faced, he broke Tabilo once in each set to move into the third round.

With the win, the Wimbledon runner-up improved to 39-9 this season. He has already captured two titles this year to add to his previous three, winning the finals in Belgrade and Queen’s. The Italian also came agonisingly close to a third in Madrid, before going down to Alexander Zverev in the final.

Berrettini came into the tournament with a 14-4 record on hard courts. Recently, he was in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open and won his only singles match at the Laver Cup. The Italian is in top form this year and looks set for a long run in the tournament.
