Elina Svitolina v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

It’s neck and neck between the two players with the tally tied at 1-1. Both those matches took place this year on hard courts – Svitolina won the match in Abu Dhabi, only to have that win later avenged by Pegula in the Australian Open fourth round.

Svitolina Survives Cirstea Scare

Elina Svitolina had to work hard in her third-round match against Sorana Cirstea, as she escaped with 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3). The number four seed needed two and a half hours to carve this win which entailed keeping her cool in the final-set tiebreak. This win follows a straight-set victory over Tereza Martincova in her opener at the BNP Paribas Open.

The fact that Cirstea managed to draw some blood in that match serves to tell Pegula that she has a solid chance of winning here.

Nonetheless, the World No. 7 has enjoyed a pretty terrific spell in 2021 and has shown on numerous occasions a staunch ability to fight back. Her performance in the last few tournaments has been particularly impressive as she won the Chicago Women’s Open and later reached the quarterfinal in the US Open and WTA 500 Chicago.

The Olympic bronze medalist also had a decent run in the first half of the season as she was one of the final eight in the WTA Abu Dhabi and Gippsland Trophy, and a semifinalist in the Miami Open.

Svitolina was also a semifinalist the last time she played at the Indian Wells, thus boasting a pedigree clearly superior to that of her American adversary.

Pegula Routs Paolini

Jessica Pegula is yet to drop a set in the BNP Paribas Open. So far, she has successfully moved past the likes of Sloane Stephens and most recently, the Italian qualifier Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-1.

With these two wins, Pegula’s record of the season now stands at 38-18 – not that much behind Svitolina either. Currently ranked World No. 24 – her best singles ranking yet – the 27-year-old has also enjoyed her time in the American tournaments.

Starting with a semifinal run in the Canadian Open, she followed it with consecutive third-round runs in the Cincinnati Open, US Open, and WTA 500 Chicago. Pegula also reached the penultimate rounds at the Australian Open, WTA Qatar Open, and WTA Dubai. Over the course of the season, she has also beaten the likes of Karolina Pliskova, Naomi Osaka, Victoria Azarenka, and Daria Kasatkina.

Svitolina v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Svitolina will start this match as the odds-on favourite but it is unlikely that she will win this match in straight sets. Pegula is in the form of her life and will fancy her chances of reaching the quarterfinal. Expect a good game of tennis.
