Cristian Garin v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

De Minaur beat Garin in their only previous meeting at the U.S. Open two years ago.

Garin Eases Past Escobedo

A very strong player on clay, the World no. 17 clearly struggles on hard courts, but he began his Indian Wells campaign with a straight sets win over American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo.

Seeded 13th in the tournament, Garin was stretched by the World No. 178 in the first set, but the Chilean dominated the second to take the contest 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes.

Garin converted 4 of 5 break points while saving 1 of 3 in the match. He was extremely good in the second set though, dropping just five points on his serve and not facing a single break point. He also won 52% of total points in the second set.

The win improved Garin to 3-6 on hard courts this year and 21-16 overall. His previous hard court wins had come over Norbert Gombos in the first round of the U.S. Open and Alex Molcan of Slovakia at the Davis Cup. He was however decimated by Gombos in the other singles match at the Davis Cup.

The clay court specialist has a 15-9 record on his preferred surface this year and that includes a run to the title in Santiago. But his struggles on hard courts have continued this season and there will be very little expectations from him in the third round.

De Minaur Downs Fellow Aussie

No. 22 seed Alex de Minaur began his Indian Wells challenge with a straight sets win over compatriot Aleksandar Vukic on Sunday.

The World No. 27 needed an hour and 35 minutes to beat the qualifier 6-4, 7-5.

After both players held serve for the first six games in the first set, a series of three breaks followed with de Minaur getting two of them. He served out the set in the next game, but found himself 0-3 down in the second with Vukic in the box seat, but de Minaur came back well in the later stages, breaking Vukic twice and wrapping up the contest.

The win ended a four-match losing streak for De Minaur and it was only his second win since winning the title in Eastbourne in June.

He began the season well by capturing the Antalya title and enjoyed a decent run until Eastbourne, but has been woefully out of form since then, winning just one match at Cincinnati, while losing all his opening matches in the rest of the six tournaments. In his last three matches before the start of the Indian Wells tournament, he was beaten by Taylor Fritz in the opening round of the U.S. Open and by Marcos Giron in the Round of 16 in Metz and Sofia.

Garin v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

Garin isn’t a hard court player, while De Minaur has had a torrid time of late, so this will be a very interesting battle. However, De Minaur plays his best tennis on the surface and has claimed four titles on hard courts. So despite his poor form, expect him to win and advance.
