Harris Made to Work by Wildcard

Harris has already enjoyed a largely successful season, during which he reached his first ATP500 final in Dubai, where he lost to Aslan Karatsev, and his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open.

Already having taken over the mantle of South African number one from Kevin Anderson, he is already assured of finishing the season in the top forty, but he still has ambitions of becoming a top 30 player by the start of next year.

To do that, he needs to perform as well as he can in the few remaining ranking events, starting in Antwerp.

He was given a relatively simple task on paper in the first round against the local Belgian wildcard Zizou Bergs,  but was made to work for his victory by the world number 186.

The first set was dominated by serve, although Harris had to save three break points in his opening service game.

However, the South African achieved the only mini-break of the tie-break and was able to consolidate that to his advantage.

Serve continued to be the determining factor in the second set until Harris forced what proved to be the only break of the match. He was able to serve out to love next game,

Struff Beats Clay Court Specialist

It has not been Struff’s best year on tour, despite the fact that he reached his maiden ATP final on home soil in Munich in May, losing on that occasion to Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Results since then have been disappointing, with a series of early exits from tournaments under his belt.

He was able to make  winning start in Antwerp, however, although his first round match with the Spanish clay court specialist Albert Ramos-Vinolas was not without its challenges.

The first ser was routine enough -one break was all that Struff needed to seize the advantage.

But Ramos-Vinolas then hit back with a break of his own midway through the second set.

Struff saved four set points on his own serve, and then two more in the next game, but it was a case of seventh time lucky in the end for the Spaniard.

There were no such dramas in the third set, Struff broke the Spaniard in the fourth game and was able to control the rest of the match from there.

Harris v Struff Prediction and Tip

Harris has been in the better form of the pair this year, and is looking for the ranking points that will help him break into the top thirty. He should accumulate some more wit victory in this contest.
