Simona Halep will look to preserve her longstanding title streak when she begins her Cluj-Napoca campaign on home soil this week. Since 2013 Halep has won at least one WTA title – the longest such streak among active players on the women’s tour.
But 2021 has been a broadly disappointing season for the Romanian star who has endured a title drought so far. Injuries have restricted the 30-year-old to play a very short schedule – 11 tournaments to be precise.
She was forced to miss the French Open during the European summer due to a calf injury sustained at the Italian Open. Halep would also take time off to tend to off-court commitments. She became a newlywed in September, tying the knot with Macedonian businessman Toni Luruc.
The former World No. 1 has played two tournaments in October but failed to add to her trophy cabinet. She fell to a surprise defeat in Indian Wells at the hands of Aliaksandra Sasnovich. And last week, she came up short against the in-form Maria Sakkari in the Kremlin Cup quarterfinals.

Breakthrough Year For Ruse
As Halep struggled with form and injuries, Elena Gabriela Ruse has risen to become the toast of Romanian tennis. She has been one of the WTA’s breakout stars in 2021.
Ruse captured her maiden WTA title at the European Open in Hamburg as a qualifier this summer. She won seven straight matches during that terrific week in Germany, beating experienced heads such as Jil Teichmann, Danielle Collins, and Andrea Petkovic en route to the biggest title of her young career.
That victory nearly gave the 23-year-old a blueprint to mimic that success in her next tournament. She would reach her second final in Palermo but was well beaten by Collins.
Ruse has made an extraordinary jump in the WTA rankings. She was ranked at No. 198 before the aforementioned success in Hamburg, but her stock has risen sharply in recent months.
Ruse comes into Monday’s clash ranked at a career-high ranking of No. 83.
Halep v Ruse Prediction and Tip
Halep and Ruse joined forces in Indian Wells to play doubles. Ruse might have used that opportunity to study her experienced compatriot very closely, but there is very little chance she will execute her plan effectively in this one.
