With five Tour titles under belt already, 2021 is turning out to be a phenomenal year for Ruud on the career front. In a season where he has lorded his rivals across surfaces and has looked unbeatable for the most part, the Norwegian has racked up a staggering 49 wins to 13 defeats.

His last brush with glory this season came at the San Diego Open where he thumped British No.1 Cameron Norrie in straight sets to lift his sixth career title.

Hoping to replicate his success at the prestigious Indian Wells Masters, Ruud opened his campaign with a brutal takedown of Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round.

A fine come-from-behind victory over rising South African star Lloyd Harris saw him set up set up a last-16 showdown with current World No. 16 Diego Schwartzman.

However, the Norwegian’s game was strangely amiss in the last-16 tie as the the Argentine inflicted a crushing straight-set defeat on him to send him crashing out of the tournament.

Determined to get his act together after suffering a rare loss this season at the Masters, Ruud launched his Vienna campaign with a second straight clash in as many events with Harris.

Though the match didn’t go to three sets unlike the last time, the Norwegian was made to literally work his socks off to get the result in his favor. The final score-line of 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) gave ample indication of how close this match was.

In Italian Lorenzo Sonego, Ruud faces another plucky rival in the battle for the quarter-finals on Thursday. While he will take a 2-0 head-to-head lead over the Italian into the contest, Sonego has the game to spring an upset on him.

What’s more, the Italian finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev last year and will be determined to go one better this year.

Sonego

The 2021 season has been a mixed-bag one for Sonego. While he did lift his maiden Tour title at the Sardegna Open, there was also the disappointment of coming close to adding a second but falling at the final hurdle as in the Eastbourne International.

Also among the highlights in an encouraging season was taking current World No.1 and 20-tme Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to three sets in the semifinal of the Italian Open and reaching the second week of the Wimbledon Championships.

After going down to German journeyman Oscar Otte in an epic four-setter in the opening round of the US Open, the Italian did extract a measure redemption with a last-16 finish at the Moselle Open and a run to the quarter-finals in San Diego.

After going down fighting to veteran South African Kevin Anderson in the opening round at the Indian Wells Masters, Sonego came into the Vienna Open hoping oi improve on last year’s runner-up finish.

He did get his campaign off to a flying start, trouncing left-handed German Dominik Koepfer in straight sets to set up a second-round showing with in-form World No.8 Casper Ruud.

While he lost both his previous head-to-head fixtures agaist the Norwegian, Sonego’s happy memories from Vienna last year will put him in a good space going into Thursday’s second-round clash.

Ruud v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Placed higher in the rankings and holding a 2-0 head-to-head lead going into this second-round clash, Rudd will certainly hold the aces. However,  Sonego will invoke golden memories from last year in his quest to engineer an upset.
