Marin Cilic v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the first round of Indian Wells, four years ago, Fritz winning in three sets.

Back to Back Finals for Croat

There is clearly something about playing in Russia that appeals to the Olympic silver medallist Cilic.

Twice winner of the Kremlin Cup in the past, he reached the final again last week, only to lose to Aslan Karatsev.

And he has battled his way through to another final in St. Petersburg. Having overcome both Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista-Agut in three set battles in earlier rounds.

Fortunately for him, his semi-final with the qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp, the surprise US Open quarter-finalist, was more straightforward.

Ina match dominated by serve, it was Cilic who forced the only break of the first set, and then followed that up with an early break in the second. With the Dutchman unable to put any pressure on his serve, Cilic was able to seal the win with another break.

Fritz Comes from Behind to Beat Struff

Fritz is into his first final since before lockdown and is hoping to add to the solitary ATP title he won in Eastbourne in 2019.

The American had signalled that he had found some late season form by reaching the semi-final in Indian Wells and has now underlined that by going one step further in Russia.

He had progressed through to the semi-final stage without dropping a set, but that soon changed on Saturday in his match with the German world number 53, Jan-Lennard Struff.

It was Fritz who forced the early break in the first set, but Struff immediately levelled and the German then managed a second break, serving out from there.

However, Fritz rallied and two breaks of his own enabled him to claim the second set.

And then he struck a decisive blow by breaking the German in the opening game of the third set.

From there the American controlled the rest of the match, sealing the win with another service break.

Cilic v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Although Fritz is the higher ranked of the two and the seed, Cilic seems to have a fondness for playing in Russia that might just give him the edge in this match.
