At the start of the year, the Russian reached the final in Abu Dhabi before eventually losing to Arnya Sabalenka, and then she won her maiden WTA title on the clay of Charleston in April.

With regular partner Elina Vesnina, she was a beaten finalist in the doubles at Wimbledon, and the pair lost out in the bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics following that.

They also reached the final in Indian Wells, the semi-finals in Dubai and Montreal, and the last eight in Rome.

This is her first tournament for three weeks. She was last in action on home soil in Moscow, where she reached the second round before losing to Simona Halep.

She was given a first round bye.

Kalinina Fresh From Challenger Win

Kalinina has enjoyed a successful year on the junior tours, where she has appeared in five finals, winning all of them, with her most recent triumph coming last week in Nantes, France.

That was on an indoor hard court, whereas all her previous victories had been on clay, the surface on which she reached her maiden WTA final in Budapest in July, eventually losing to the Kazakh Yulia Putintseva.

A quarter-finalist in Romania, before her run was ended by the eventual winner, Anett Kontaveit, she met Martine Trevisan of Italy, the world number 113, in the first round in Austria, the same opponent she beat in the semi-finals in France last week.

And the outcome was just the same – a straight sets’ win for the Ukrainian.
