Matteo Berrettini v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before. De Minaur won their encounter in a Challenger event in Spain in 2017 on a hard court, but the Italian won at Queen’s on grass last June in straight sets.

Can Berrettini Take the Next Step?

2021 saw Berrettini cement his reputation as one of the world’s top players, winning the biggest tournament of his career at Queen’s and then showing his appreciation for grass – rare among Italian players- by reaching his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon, eventually losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

He also reached the quarter-finals in Paris and New York, and the fourth round in Melbourne, was a beaten finalist in the Madrid Masters, and won the Serbian Open, demonstrating his ability to compete effectively on all surfaces.

Now his next challenge is to ensure that he is a regular challenger for Grand Slam titles, beginning in Australia where the likely absence of Djokovic means that the field is wide open this year.

Last year in this event he helped Italy reach the finals before they were eventually beaten by Russia.

De Minaur Hoping to Resume His Upward Trajectory

Although de Minaur began 2021 strongly with victors in the Antalya Open in Turkey, and then went on to add the Eastbourne title to his collection on grass, he ended the year lower in the world rankings than he started it, which will be a source of frustration to him.

In particular, he knows that his record in major tournaments needs to improve. Although he got to the third round of his home Grand Slam in Melbourne, he was knocked out at the second-round stage in Paris, and failed to win a match at Wimbledon or New York.

And again, he underperformed relatively in Masters events, with a run to the fourth round at Indian Wells being a rare exception.

A disappointment for him was being selected to pay for Australia at the Olympics, only to be forced to withdraw after contracting Covid. However, in 2020, he helped his country reach the semi-final stage of the ATP Cup.

Berrettini v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

De Minaur will have home court advantage, and the support of the local crowd but, despite that, Berrettini will begin favourite, with both men looking to find early form ahead of the Australian Open.
