Can Isner Maintain His Form in 2022?

Now 36 years old, Isner is approaching the veteran stage of a career that has seen him win 16 senior singles titles, the most recent of which was the Atlanta Open in August, his first tour victory for two years.

He was also successful in the doubles event in Los Cabos, Mexico, partnering Hans Hach Verdugo in that tournament.

Isner is back in Australia after a year’s absence. He refused to travel in 2021 because he did not want to undergo the mandatory quarantine period imposed due to Covid regulations, but despite being something of an anti-vaxxer, he has complied with all the health protocols this time.

His record at the Australian Open has been poor over the years – with just two fourth round appearances in 12 previous visits. He will be hoping to find some form in the ATP Cup which will help him improve on that.

Shapovalov Looking to Reach the Next Level

Shapovalov ended 2021cloe to a career high ranking, but it might have been more. He reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon, and missed the chance to add to his one solitary senior ATP title, losing in the final of the open events in Geneva, and in Stockholm, the final tournament of 2021.

Abd, frustratingly for him, he also lost out on the battle to be Canada’s number one going into the end of season break, pipped to it by his rival and friend Felix Augur Aliassime.

With them both playing for their nation in the ATP Cup, Cand have won of the strongest teams on paper, and they will be hoping to do well.

Like his opponent Shapovalov does not have a good record at the Australian Open, having never gone beyond the third round. He will be looking for the form that suggests he might improve on that.

Isner v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

With 14 years between them, youth is definitely ion the side of the Canadian. In reality, at his age, Isner is unlikely to improve significantly, whilst Shapovalov has the potential to become a top ten player. This would be a good chance early in the season to put down a marker.
