Daniil Medvedev v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

Humbert brings a 1-0 lead in the series, winning the pair’s only match on the clay courts of Hamburg in 2020.

Medvedev Looks To Spearhead Russia To A Second Title

Russia’s title defense has suffered a major setback, with its second top-ranked player Andrey Rublev pulling out after contracting coronavirus whilst playing the Abu Dhabi exhibition event – the Mubadala championship.

With two more members from their 2021 successful bid also withdrawing (Aslan Karatsev and Evgeny Donskoy), that leaves Daniil Medvedev, their No. 1 player, with an almighty task in Sydney.

Team Russia has been slotted in a difficult group that also contains last year’s runner-up Italy, France, and the host nation Australia.

Medvedev produced a career-best season in 2021, winning a career-high 62 matches on the ATP tour. And he rounded off a stellar season with his first Major title at the US Open, simultaneously ending Novak Djokovic’s dreams of winning the Grand Slam.

The pre-season expectation is that Medvedev will be primed to knock Djokovic off his perch at the summit of men’s tennis. And with the Serbian absent in Sydney, Medvedev will chalk up a few points to aid his cause.

Humbert Set For ATP Cup Debut

Following Austria’s withdrawal, France was instilled as a late replacement in the draw for the 2022 ATP Cup. They will be led by the flamboyant left-hander Ugo Humbert, along with the likes of Arthur Rinderknech, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, and Fabrice Martin.

Humbert’s addition is the most interesting given that Gael Monfils will not lead the line. A peculiar year on the ATP tour in 2021 yielded a third career ATP title on the lawns of Halle, but surprisingly enough, Humbert finished the season with a negative win-loss record (19-20).

The 23-year-old seeks to arrest a terrible run of results after the Tokyo Olympics. The Frenchman won just one match in five tournaments, ending the year with five straight defeats.

With a clean slate in 2022, Humbert is set to make his debut at the ATP Cup and he owns a positive head-to-head record against his opponent Daniil Medvedev. Can he conjure up another shock win on Sunday?

Medvedev v Humbert Prediction and Tip

This almost feels like a case of baptism by fire for Ugo Humbert in his first outing at the ATP Cup. Medvedev should be too good for the French lefty.
