Elena Rybakina v Storm Sanders Head to Head

This will be their first tour-level meeting. Their only previous meeting was in a qualifying round in 2017, which Sanders won in three.

Rybakina Making Constant Improvements

Elena Rybakina has made significant gains over the last two years and the Kazakh will be hoping to build on that this season.

She made it to five WTA finals in 2020, winning the title in Hobart and finishing runner-up on four occasions. In contrast, she couldn’t reach a single final in 2021, but made her quarterfinal debut in Grand Slams by reaching the last eight in both singles and doubles at the French Open. The 22-year-old also broke into the top 15 in the world for the first time in her career.

Currently ranked No. 14, Rybakina’s other significant accomplishments last year included runs to the semifinals in Eastbourne and the Chicago Fall Classic and a fourth-place finish at the Olympics.

It was a disappointing end for the Kazakh, who lost a close three-set semifinal to eventual gold medallist Belinda Bencic and then lost the bronze medal match to Elina Svitolina despite taking the first set 1-6.

Rybakina, who got three top 10 wins last year, struggled to close out three-set contests, showing nerves in key junctures of crucial matches. A 6-10 record in three-set contests in 2021 is testament of that.

A player for all surfaces, Rybakina brings a 56-31 hard court record to Adelaide and the seventh seed will be one of the contenders to make a deep push.

Sanders Looking for a Repeat of Last Year’s Performance

World No. 132 Storm Sanders will be hoping to repeat her last year’s exploits in Adelaide.

The 27-year-old Australian, who has received a wildcard for the tournament, had made it to her first tour-level quarterfinal in the tournament last season, defeating Ajla Tomljanovic and Yulia Putintseva in the first two rounds after qualifying for the main draw. She, however, fell in the last eight stage to eventual finalist Belinda Bencic.

Later that year, Sanders made it to a second WTA 250 quarterfinal in Prague, but once again her run was halted at that stage.

Yet to break into the top 100, the left-handed Australian is better-known for her doubles game. She reached the semifinals of the women’s doubles at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals of the doubles at the U.S. Open last year.

Can Sanders pull off a shock win on Monday?
