Tomljanovic Coming off a Decent 2021

Knocked out in the first round of the Adelaide International last year, Ajla Tomljanovic will hope for better returns this year as she begins her campaign against Heather Watson on Monday.

Last season was one of the better ones for Tomljanovic, who made it to her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon, but lost to compatriot and eventual champion Ashleigh Barty.

Yet to win a WTA title, she couldn’t add to her four final appearances in 2021, still the World no. 45 would be happy with a 30-24 season, which also saw her make a fourth round debut at Indian Wells and reach the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time. In addition, she also earned her fourth career top 10 win, defeating Garbine Muguruza in three sets in the second round at Indian Wells.

The Croatian-born 28-year-old also played in Adelaide in 2020, winning her first round match against Yulia Putintseva but falling to Simona Halep in the second round.

Last year, she was stunned by Aussie qualifier Storm Sanders in the first round.

Can she go deep into the tournament this year?

Watson on a Six-Match Losing Streak

Heather Watson has not won a tour-level match since beating Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round in Cincinnati in August 2021. A qualifier in that tournament, Watson was knocked out in the next round by Ash Barty and since then, she hasn’t won a singles match.

The 29-year-old Briton was forced to retire from her first round contest against Ana Bogdan at the Chicago Women’s Open and the losing streak continued in the next four tournaments as she went down to Kaja Juvan at the U.S. Open, Sorana Cirstea in Portoroz, Sloane Stephens at Indian Wells and Clara Tauson in Tenerife, Spain, all in the first rounds.

Having lost the last six matches, Watson will be eager to get back to winning ways. She ended the 2021 season with a woeful 11-21 record, which saw her finish the season as World No. 72, 14 places below her season opening ranking of 58. The only tournament where she did well last year was in Birmingham, where she made it to the semifinals before falling to Ons Jabeur.

A four-time champion on the tour, Watson will be making her debut in Adelaide this season, in hopes of starting the new year on a bright note.
