This is the first meeting between the two ladies on the WTA Tour.

Sakkari, Enjoying Life in the Top 10

Maria Sakkari had an impeccable season in 2021. Even though she didn’t quite win a singles trophy, her consistency and solid performance allowed her to become World No. 6, all the way from the early 20s in the ranking.

Her win-loss tally for the season stood at 38-20, with notable results across the spectrum. The 26-year-old started the season with consecutive semifinal appearances in Abu Dhabi and the Grampians Trophy and later reached the same stage in the Miami Masters.

Sakkari was also a semifinalist in the US Open and French Open where she defeated many big names like Petra Kvitova, Bianca Andreescu, Karolina Pliskova, Iga Swiatek, and Sofia Kenin.

Following the runner-up feat in the Ostrava Open, Sakkari qualified for the year-end WTA Finals where she once again reached the semis. Even though she succumbed to Anett Kontaveit, it allowed her to reach her career-best singles ranking.

Now, after a well-deserved rest and some training, Sakkari looks primed to reach new heights in 2022.

Zidansek, also on a Roll

Tamara Zidansek also had an impressive spell in 2021, climbing from #87 position to the 30th-ranked player in the WTA rankings.

Her heroics, however, were restricted mainly to clay courts. She was a runner-up in the Copa Colsanitas and later, reached the semifinal in the French Open. That was her best performance in a Grand Slam – which was later followed by a title run in the WTA Lausanne.

Towards the end of the season, her form faded a bit but not she did well to retain a spot in the top 30.

While she has some experience and relatively decent form, her lack of pedigree on hard courts may hamper her chances in Adelaide. Nonetheless, a confident player that the 24-year-old is, she will do her best to give Sakkari a run for her money.

Sakkari v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Sakkari will start as the odds-on favourite and should do well to win here. However, it may not be a clinical win, considering that Zidansek has come leaps and bound than where she was a couple of years ago.

Expect a good game of tennis.
