Alexander Zverev v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

This will be a sixth meeting between the two 24-year-olds.

Zverev leads the head-to-head rivalry 3-2, but they were 1-1 from their two meetings last year. Zverev beat Fritz at Wimbledon, while Fritz won their quarterfinal meeting at Indian Wells.

Zverev Beats Norrie, but Germany Loses to Great Britain

Alexander Zverev seems to have picked up from where he left last season, winning his singles match against Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie on Sunday. But a defeat for Jan-Lenard Struff against Britain’s Dan Evans in the other singles match and then a straight sets defeat for Zverev and partner Kevin Krawietz in the doubles against Dan Evans and Jammie Murray handed Great Britain a 2-1 win in the tie.

A winner of six titles last season, Zverev will next face the United States’ Taylor Fritz in a singles match on Tuesday. The German, who won the season-ending ATP Finals title last season, extended his winning streak to four matches. He doesn’t have a great ATP Cup record though, having lost all three of his singles matches in the inaugural season in 2020 and winning just one and losing two in the second season in 2021. So the Olympic champion will take heart from his win on Sunday.

Both Zverev and Norrie looked solid on their serve in the first set, with neither getting broken, but the German dominated the tie-break, taking it with ease. With the first set in the bag, there was no looking back for the World No. 3 who broke Norrie twice in the second to win the match 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 in an hour and 28 minutes.

Zverev had a 59-15 record last season, which included five hard court titles (Acapulco, Olympics, Cincinnati, Vienna and ATP Finals) and one clay court title (the Madrid Masters).

Fritz Fights Back To Beat Auger-Aliassime

Taylor Fritz bounced back after losing the first set to defeat Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in a singles match and then combined with John Isner to beat the Canadian pairing of Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov in the doubles to give Team USA a 3-0 win over Canada (Isner had beaten Brayden Schnur in straight sets in the other singles).

Thanks to the 3-0 drubbing, the United States are on top of Group C, followed by Great Britain, who won 2-1 against Germany.

A runner-up in St. Petersburg and a five-time semifinalist last season, Fritz squandered four set points in the first set tiebreak against Auger-Aliassime, losing the set despite leading 2-6 in the tiebreaker. He came back well in the second, breaking his opponent once in each set to win the contest 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4.

Fritz’s determined fightback in his opening match will give him a lot of confidence going into the next game against Zverev, a player he has beaten recently on his way to the Indian Wells semifinals. Fritz finished the 2021 season with a 34-22 record and the 2019 Eastbourne champion will be hoping for a similar effort this season.
