Naomi Osaka v Alize Cornet Head to Head

In their one and only encounter on the WTA Tour so far, Osaka was the winner. The match took place in the Gippsland Trophy, Melbourne, last season where the Japanese prevailed 6-2, 6-2.

Osaka, Hoping to Find her Joy on the Tour

2021 was a tumultuous year for the 24-year-old Naomi Osaka. The former World No. 2 won the Australian Open title and started the season on a strong note. However, as the season progressed, she took more time to focus on her mental health more than anything else.

Osaka’s participation was limited to only the big events on the WTA Tour. Things took a turn for her in the French Open where she chose not to participate in her mandatory press conferences. After the first round of fines, she withdrew from the competition, citing mental health reasons.

She later withdrew from the Wimbledon Championships but did participate in the Tokyo Olympics and later, Cincinnati Open and the US Open. Her performance in all three was highly underwhelming. Most notably in the Flushing Meadows, she lost to Leylah Ann Fernandez in three sets, despite having a match point in the second.

Osaka ended her season early to take some time off tennis, further saying that winning did not make her happy anymore.

But this was in September – it’s been well over three months since then and the world is hoping she has found her peace now. Clearly, the four-time Grand Slam champion has the skillset and an impeccable level of play – but that doesn’t matter if you don’t enjoy what you do.

Cornet, Continues to Battle Mediocrity

World No. 61 Alize Cornet ended the 2021 season with a win-loss tally of 27-27. She reached the penultimate rounds only in a handful of tournaments and barring these, she succumbed mainly in the early rounds.

Cornet’s sole highlight was the runner-up feat in the Chicago Open – she reached her first singles final in two years but lost to Elina Svitolina. In addition, the Frenchwoman was a semifinalist in Tenerife and Berlin.

In the latter, she defeated the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza, thus proving that she can punch well above her weight.

Osaka v Cornet Prediction and Tip

There is no denying that Osaka will feel the pressure to deliver but the most important thing for her is to take it easy. Cornet will look to capitalise on her possibly shaky morale, but it will not be an easy task.

Osaka should win this but in all likelihood, it may not be a clinical match as we have come to expect of her.
