Casper Ruud v Cristian Garín Head to Head

Garin has a 2-0 lead, having won a semifinal in Sao Paulo in 2019 and the final in Houston the same year. Both those tournaments were on clay. This will be the first time that they will meet on a hard court.

Ruud Loses to Bautista Agut

Casper Ruud and Norway were eliminated from the ATP Cup after they went down to Spain 0-3 in their second tie in Group A. Spain, which had also beaten Chile 3-0, remained perfect and on top of the group, while the Norwegians, who lost 1-2 to Serbia in the opening tie, sat at the bottom of the group with one win and five defeats from six matches.

The only win for Norway came in the first tie, when Ruud won his singles match against Dusan Lajovic. He couldn’t add another win on Monday, going down to the experienced Roberto Bautista Agut, who improved his ATP Cup record to 9-2.

Bautista Agut got the only break of the match in the seventh game of the first set. Neither player got broken in the second but it was the Spaniard who edged past the Norwegian in the tiebreak to seal the contest 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in an hour and 47 minutes.

Ruud, who shed the tag of “clay-court specialist” in 2021 by producing a host of good results on hard courts, which included a run to the semifinals of the ATP Finals and a title in San Diego, is now 3-2 at ATP Cup (He had a 2-1 record in 2020).

The 23-year-old Norwegian, who claimed a total of five titles in a 57-17 season last year, cannot take his team to the semifinals, but will look to end the tournament on a high by getting his first win over Garin.

Determined Garin Picks Maiden ATP Cup Win

A determined Cristian Garin picked up his first ATP Cup win as Chile beat Serbia 2-1 to win a tie for the first time in the tournament history.

Garin, who had a 0-3 record in 2020, had lost his singles match against Spain in the opening tie, but he got a win over Dusan Lajovic on Monday to improve his ATP Cup record to 1-4. Filip Krajinovic had won the No. 2 singles against Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, but it was the pairing of Barrios Vera and Tabilo that defeated Serbian duo Nikola Cacic and Matej Sabanov in the doubles match to hand the South American nation the tie.

In what was a hard-fought contest, Lajovic took the first set in an hour and nine minutes. There were seven breaks of serves, with the Serb converting four of 11 break points and Garin converting three of 10. Both players did a better job of holding their serves in the second set, with Garin getting the sole break in the ninth game before wrapping up the set in the next.

The Chilean raced to a 3-0 lead in the third with two breaks of serve, before Lajovic pulled off, handing Garin a 4-6, 6-4, 3-0 win.

The Chilean will be happy with his resolute performance on Monday, particularly after being handed a 6-0, 6-3 drubbing by Bautista Agut in his singles match against Spain on Saturday.

An accomplished clay-court player, Garin was 21-18 last season, winning a fifth career clay court title in Santiago.

Ruud v Garin Prediction and Tip

Although Ruud is yet to beat Garin, the Norwegian is much better player on hard courts than his opponent. Expect Ruud to win the contest in straight sets.
