Elena Rybakina defeated Australia’s Storm Sanders in an up-and-down first round match on Monday.
Making her debut in Adelaide, the World No. 14 hit the court running, as she raced to a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serve. Sanders did pull a break back but couldn’t get another, conceding the first set. The Aussie, however, turned the tables in the second set, breaking Rybakina twice and winning the set with ease.
In the decider, Sanders went a break up in the very first game, but Rybakina made a stunning return, winning the next six games in a row to close out the two-hour contest 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Rybakina, who featured in five WTA finals in 2020, reached her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the French Open in 2021 and also broke into the top 15 for the first time in her career last year.
The Kazakh, who had struggled in three-set matches last season, would take a lot of confidence from Monday’s win. She will be aiming to reach the last eight for the first time since reaching the semifinals of the Chicago Fall Classic.

Bouzkova Scurries Past Papamichail
Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova won her first round match with ease as she defeated fellow qualifier Despina Papamichail of Greece in straight sets.
Bouzkova didn’t face a break point in the match, while she broke her opponent once in the first set and thrice in the second to win the one-hour-and-14-minute contest 6-3, 6-0.
The Czech had qualified for the main draw with a three-set win over America’s Francesca Di Lorenzo in the first qualifying round and a straight sets win over Russia’s Anna Blinkova in the second qualifying round on Monday.
The 23-year-old, ranked No. 90th in the world, was a runner-up at the Phillip Island Trophy last year and a semifinalist in Guadalajara. Additionally, she also had two quarterfinal finishes in Birmingham and Luxembourg.
