Mertens v Sasnovich Head to Head

The pair have met four times before, and the current head-to-head record is two wins apiece. Sasnovich won their first two matches, at Cincinnati in 2017, and in Wuhan a year later, but Mertens has won both of their more recent encounters, at the Canadian Masters in 2019 and in Luxembourg last year.

Mertens Achieving Success in Singles and Doubles

Mertens is a three-time doubles Grand Slam champion, winning the AUS Open in 2018 and the Australian Open with Aryna Sabalenka, and Wimbledon with Hsieh Su-wei in July.

She has also won other senior doubles titles with a variety of partners, including Indian Wells and the Wuhan Open twice.

She has also enjoyed a successful singles career, with six WTA tiles to her name, including, last year, the Gippsland Trophy which she claimed ion Australia soil. Two months later she was beaten in the final of the Istanbul Cup by the Romanian Sorano Cirstea.

However, results tailed off in the second half of last season, so she will be hoping to regain some momentum.

Sasnovich Once a Top 30 Player

Sasnovich was ranked in the top 30 three years ago, although her ranking has slipped considerably since then.

The woman from Belarus has never won a senior WTA title, although she has been in two finals, losing in South Korea in 2015 and in Brisbane, four years ago.

Her diminished ranking meant that she was made to enter the qualifying competition for this event in Melbourne, where she played the local player, Olivia Tjandramulia in the first round. However, the world number 522 did not unduly trouble her, and she won for the loss of just four games.

Leia Tsurenko of the Ukraine, her second-round opponent, was more of a challenge, in their second-round match, and the two contested a tight first set, before Sasnovich achieved a vital break of serve to take a lead. However, in the second set, she was too strong for the world number 118, and dropped just one more game in the match.

Mertens v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Although Sasnovich won the first two matches between the pair, it is Mertens who has triumphed in their most recent matches, and can be expected to come out on top again, especially as she has previously enjoyed success in Australia in both singles and doubles.
