Facing Alize Cornet in the Melbourne Set 1 opener, the 24-year-old battled through three sets to win the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. She was really good on her first serve, winning 78% of the points there. In the post-match conference, the four-time Grand Slam winner also expressed how her love for the sport has redeveloped, following the break from the tour last season.
Osaka ended last year as World No. 13 with a tally of 18-6. After winning the Australian Open, she only played in a few other big events, choosing to focus more on her mental health.
That said, the time off from tennis seems to have done well for her. She appears to be in good spirits and is likely to make it deep in Melbourne.

Zanveska Carves Martic Upset
World No. 82 Maryna Zanevska started her campaign with a clinical, 6-3, 6-4 win over Petra Martic. The Belgian was the superior player in every regard, winning a total of 73 points to Martic’s 62.
Not a lot of people may have heard of the 28-year-old but she is certainly not a player to be taken lightly. She started last season outside the top 250 and by the end of the year, she was ranked at the 81st position.
Zanevska delivered this remarkable turnaround in her form with a singles title from the Poland Open and two from the ITF circuit. On the whole, her tally for the year stood at 42-15. Now, she finds herself battling a formidable player and irrespective of the outcome, she is bound to learn a thing or two to improve her game further.
Osaka v Zanevska Prediction and Tip
Zanevska, having beaten Martic, has gotten a taste of what it is like to punch above her weight. That match, if anything, has primed her to take on Osaka.
