Simona Halep v Victorija Golubic Head to Head

Halep and Golubic have featured in just one career head-to-head meeting till date. Their only on-court meeting came  in the Fed Cup, which has since been rechristened as the Bille Jean King Cup, in 2018. Halep triumphed then in three sets.

Halep Hopes to Continue Dominant Run

After an injury-plagued season that saw her miss a good chunk of the action on the women’s circuit, including the big-ticket WTA Finals, Halep got her new season off to winning start at the ongoing Melbourne Summer Set.

Up against unheralded Australian Destanee Aiava in her tournament opener, the two-time Grand Slam champion brought all her experience and superior skill-sets into play to make short work of her opponent.

After racing to a 6-4 win in the opening set, the veteran Romanian star, who go married during her time on the sidelines last year, stepped up a gear in the second to cruise to a facile and comprehensive 6-4, 6-2 victory.

The win saw Halep set up a clash with fellow countrywoman Elena-Gabriela Ruse in her next. Imposing herself on her compatriot fairly early in the contest, the veteran Romanian dominated the passage of play in the opening set and her efforts were duly rewarded as she won it by a thumping 6-2 margin.

Going for the kill in the second, the former Grand Slam champion moved through the gears effortlessly as she pummeled her hapless opponent to eventually cruise home 6-2, 6-1.

Up against emerging Swiss star Victorija Golubic in the quarter-finals on Friday, the current World No.20 would look to put herself in contention for the title with a similarly sleek display.

What would give the Romanian more confidence going into the last-eight clash is that  she won her only previous head-to-head contest against the Swiss.  However, Golubic did take the champion to three sets then and is quite capable of turning the odds in her favor.

Golubic Eyes Halep Scalp

Currently ranked 43rd in singles, Golubic has struck form in her season opener notching up two wins back-to-back to secure passage to the quarter-finals on the ongoing Melbourne Summer Set.

Opening her campaign against Lauren Davis of the US, the Swiss star kept her nose in front in first set and eventually won it 7-5. Looking to seize the momentum in the second, Golubic was literally all over Davis as she waltzed to a thumping 7-5, 6-1 win.

Up against Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in her next earlier on Thursday, the Swiss took down her opponent 6-3, 6-0 to ensure her passage to the last eight.

However, between Golubic and a place in semifinals stands two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep. While she came out second best in their only previous on-court meeting in 2018, the Swiss, on current form, would fancy taking down Halep on Friday.

Halep v Golubic Prediction and Tip

Halep’s win her only previous head-to-head battle with Golubic will give her a definite head-start over Swiss going into Friday’s clash. However, the latter has looked clinical in her victories so far and would believe that she can spring an upset on the Romanian on current form.
