Dimitrov Hoping For Resurgent Season

Former world number three and 2017 ATP year- end finals champion Grigor Dimitrov has not been able to reproduce that form or those results since.  It has been an inconsistent last few seasons from him, with him even falling out of the top 50 in the world at one point in time.

However, results such as the 2019 US Open semi-finals and more recently the final four in late 2021 at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 and at the San Diego Open have ensured that he has brought his ATP rankings back to around the top 25 in the world.

Looking for a good run here at the Melbourne ATP 250, Dimitrov started his campaign after a first round bye against Facundo Bagnis of Argentina who was coming off a confidence boosting opening round victory against former world number one Andy Murray.

It was a tight first set with Bagnis breaking Dimitrov to close 7-5 and the second set looked very much on par course with the Argentine preventing Dimitrov from gaining any sort of momentum with both holding serve. The Bulgarian broke through in the tiebreak for a 7-3 win to send the match into a decider.

Dimitrov used his experience and skills to his advantage in the decider to close out the third set 6-3 and book himself a spot in the final eight hoping to dust off some of the rust from the off-season sooner rather than later.

Van der Zandcshulp Looking To Build On Breakthrough 2021.

It was a breakthrough latter part of 2021, where little known Dutchman at the time Botic Van Der Zandschulp was a surprise quarter-finalist at the 2021 US Open and followed it up with the semis at the St.Petersburg Open and the quarter-finals in Stockholm.

With victories against Diego Schwartzman and Casper Ruud at the US Open, Andrey Rublev and Sebastian Korda in St.Petersburg and Marton Fucsovics in Stockholm, it was definitely a purple patch for the Dutchman.

Van der Zandschulp has looked good this week in Melbourne, with two convincing wins against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and American Mckenzie McDonald. The Dutchman prevailed in straight sets on both occassions looking like continuing his strong form on the hard courts from the latter part of 2021.
