Top seed Gael Monfils dropped just three games as he breezed past Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round in Adelaide on Thursday.
The World no. 21 had a dominant start breaking his opponent twice in the first set, before Cerundolo got a break back. But that wasn’t enough as the Frenchman broke the Argentinian a third time in the set to wrap it up in just 30 minutes.
Monfils was even more dominant in the second set, dropping just one point on his serve and winning 10 of 18 return points for a 6-2, 6-1 win in 55 minutes.
The 35-year-old Frenchman, who had a very poor start last season, going 3-10 before picking up steam in the later half of the year, will be encouraged by the winning start in Adelaide and would be looking to build on it.
Monfils finished with an 18-17 record in 2021, which included a runner-up finish in Sofia and a final four finish in Metz.

Paul Battles Past Daniel
Tommy Paul ended 2021 by capturing his maiden ATP title in Stockholm. He has continued his winning momentum in 2022, winning his second match of the year on Thursday and extending his unbeaten run to seven matches.
But Paul has had to slog for both his wins in Adelaide. On Tuesday, the American withstood 16 aces from the Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely before winning the first round contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In the second round on Thursday, Paul needed two hours and 36 minutes to see off Japan’s Taro Daniel.
Down 1-4 in the first set, Paul made a solid comeback, winning the next five games in a row. Both players traded a break in an evenly contested second set, but it was Daniel who outplayed the American in the tiebreak to take the match into the third.
Paul was the first to break in the deciding set going up 3-0, but Daniel broke back in the seventh and drew level in the next game. But Paul got a vital break in the 10th game and clinched the match 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4.
The 24-year-old World No. 43 will hope to keep the winning run going against Monfils.
Monfils v Paul Prediction and Tip
Paul is in great form and Monfils can expect a much tougher battle in the quarterfinal. An upset win for Paul cannot be ruled out.
