Elena Rybakina v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

Rybakina leads Rogers 2-1 although, both of those wins have come outside of hard courts. They last met in the 2021 Wimbledon where the Kazakh prevailed in straight sets.

The duo have also met in the 2020 US Open – back then, it was Rogers who emerged as the winner with 7-5, 6-1.

Rogers Edges Past Sakkari

After a roaring start to her Adelaide International campaign against Maddison Inglis, Shelby Rogers made an even bigger statement against the third seed Maria Sakkari.

In a pure display of resilience, the 29-year-old American defeated the Greek 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4, in two hours and 18 minutes. While her service game wasn’t that strong, she did win four out of five break points to win the crucial bouts. Ultimately, that proved to be the difference – even though Sakkari won 52.9% of the total points.

Rogers is clearly playing some remarkable tennis here. With a day’s rest in hand, she should be well-rested, ready to take on the Rybakina challenge.

It is also worth noting that the current World No. 40 has done well to carry forward her superb form from the end of the previous season. Rogers featured in the fourth round in the US Open, Chicago Open, and concluded the year with a quarterfinal run in the Indian Wells Open.

Rybakina Finds her Footing

22-year-old Elena Rybakina needed a while to find her ground in Adelaide. She started off with a shaky, three-set win over Storm Sanders in the opener but against Marie Bouzkova, she appeared to be far more composed.

Rybakina managed to keep her unforced errors count on the low side as she beat the Czech 6-3, 6-4, in an hour and 34 minutes.

This performance was also in line with her heroics from the 2021 season that saw her reach the semifinal in the Tokyo Olympics, Eastbourne International, and WTA 500 Chicago. At the same time, the World No. 14 lost her footing at the end of the year when she incurred back to back first-round defeats in Indian Wells and Moscow.

Nonetheless, she is not a player to be taken lightly. Rybakina has a strong serve and if she manages to keep the errors at a minimum, she may very well reach the semis.

Rybakina v Rogers Prediction and Tip

This match can go either way but if we are to pick a winner, it would have to be Rogers. She has the experience and it looks like this can be the season where she finally leaves her mark.

The match has also got all the signs of being a three-setter – which means we’re in store for a good game.
