Li Storms Into Semifinals

Ann Li moved into the semifinals of the Melbourne Summer Set 2 with a straight sets win over Russian qualifier Kamilla Rakhimova in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The 21-year-old American, who hasn’t dropped a set in the entire week, was off to a flying start in the quarterfinal, taking the first set in less than 30 minutes. The Russian put up a strong fight in the second set, taking a 3-5 lead with three breaks of serve against Li’s two. Rakhimova couldn’t serve out the set though, as Li broke back a third time in the ninth game and then broke again for the fourth time in the set before closing out the match for a 6-1, 7-5 win.

Li had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the first round. She continued her impressive run in the second round against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova, winning the contest 6-1, 6-4 without being broken even once in the match.

This is the second straight year when Li has got off to a great start. Last year, the American had reached the final of the Grampians Trophy in her season-opener, but had to share the title with Annett Kontaveit as the final couldn’t be played.

She also ended the season on a high, winning her maiden WTA title in Tenerife. Can she reach her third career final with a win Saturday?

Sasnovich’s Winning Run Continues

Aliaksandra Sasnovich continued her winning march in Melbourne, winning her fifth match in as many days after her quarterfinal opponent, sixth seed Clara Tauson of Denmark retired while trailing 3-6, 0-2.

The 27-year-old Sansnovich has not dropped a set in the entire week. She defeated Australia’s Olivia Tjandramulia and Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the qualifying rounds and then continued her good showing in the main draw, defeating China’s Wang Xinyu 6-4, 6-2 in the first round and Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

This will be Sasnovich’s first final four appearance since her run to the semifinals at the Sydney International in 2019. A two-time champion on the tour, she had a 19-20 record last year, which included two quarterfinal appearances.

Li v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip
