Denis Shapovalov v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22-year-old Canadian, and his Russian opponent, who is two years older.

Shapovalov’s Mixed Fortunes in Australia

Unlike his opponent, Shapovalov has only played two matches so far in the ATP Cup, and has enjoyed mixed fortunes in both.

He began with a match against Dan Evans of Great Britain, and, although he was the higher ranked of the pair, the world number 25 proved too strong for him, and a service break in each set enabled Evans to clinch the contest.

He then became involved in a pressure match against the German number two Jan-Lennard Struff, to determine which team would progress to the last four.

The first set was tight, and although Shapovalov created the only break points, he could not convert them, and he had to rely on the tie-break to take the lead in the match.

Struff, the world number 51, though, broke him early in the second set, and consolidated that to level the match.

However, it was the Canadian who secured the early break in the third set. Both men had break points, but none of the were taken, and Shapovalov secured the win with his second match point.

Safiullin Punching Above His Weight

Although in an ideal world Safiullin would not have made the Russian team given the talent that they have at their disposal, he has more than justified his selection in his three matches so far against men all ranked considerably higher than him in the world.

He began by coming from behind to beat Arthur Rinderknech of France, the number 58, dropping the first set but then winning the next two.

And then he upset local favourite, James Duckworth, the world number 49, beating the Australian in straight sets, the first clinched in a tie-break, and the second courtesy of a solitary service break.

He lost to Jannik Sinner, the world number ten, but pushed the Italian to a tie-break in the first set, before one break of serve was enough for him to cede the second.

Results elsewhere meant that his Russian team were still able to progress.

Shapovalov v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

On paper, Shapovalov will start the clear favourite, but Safiullin has proved he is no respecter of reputations, so the Canadian will need to guard against complacency.
