Nadal Dispatches Ruusuvuori

Back in action for the first time since the Washington Open in August last year, Rafael Nadal eased into the final of the Melbourne Summer Set with a straight sets win on Saturday.

The World No. 6 saved two break points in the very first game of the match, but recovered quickly. Both players held serve for the first nine games of the set, with Nadal capitalising on the only break point in the 10th game to seal the first set in 47 minutes.

The second set was even tougher. Although Nadal went up 5-3, he couldn’t close out the match as the Finnish player broke back to stay in the match. Both players held serve over the next two games before Nadal broke once again to win 6-4, 7-5 in an hour and 56 minutes.

In all Nadal struck 28 winners and made 20 unforced errors.

The former No. 1 had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Ricardas Berankis in the second round. He got a free pass into the semifinals after his quarterfinal opponent Tallon Griekspoor withdrew with a foot injury.

On Sunday, the 35-year-old will be featuring in 126th tour-level final of his career. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has 88 titles and has finished runner-up on 37 occasions.

An 89th title on Sunday will give him a lot of confidence going into the Australian Open, where he won the title in 2009 and finished runner-up four times in the last decade.

Cressy’s Stunning Run Continues

American Maxime Cressy’s extraordinary run in the tournament continued on Saturday, as he knocked out third seed Grigor Dimitov in another two-hour-plus contest and made his way to a maiden ATP final.

Cressy served 17 aces and saved all five of the break points as he defeated the Bulgarian 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) in two hours and four minutes.

It was the American’s sixth win in six days as he needed to qualify for the main draw. Ranked 112th in the world, the 24-year-old had made it to the main draw after scoring straight sets wins over Portugal’s Joao Sousa and Italy’s Andrea Vavassori respectively in the qualifying rounds.

Continuing his good form in the main draw, he handed Australia’s Rinky Hijikata a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing in the first round and then accounted for the second seed Reilly Opelka in an epic three-setter which lasted two hours and 26 minutes.

Cressy fought back from a set down and saved two match points in the final set to beat the big-serving Opelka 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9).

Cressy had to toil hard again in the quarterfinal, needing two hours and 26 minutes to dispatch Spain’s Jaume Munar 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Against Dimitrov, Cressy struck 44 winners in the match against Dimitrov’s 35 and just 11 unforced errors, three more than his opponent. It was another hard-fought contest with Cressy getting the only break of the match in the last game of the first set. The second set went into the tiebreak and Dimitrov dominated the early exchanges racing to a 3-6 lead. But Cressy fought back and saved all three set points.

The American then wasted three match points, but eventually converted the fourth to wrap up the match in straight sets.

Nadal v Cressy Prediction and Tip

This may seem to be a lopsided battle, but given how Cressy has played in the tournament, he can give Nadal a run for his money. Expect Cressy to put up a fight, but Nadal should capture the title.
