Denis Shapovalov v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

Shapovalov Lifts Canada to Final

Denis Shapovalov has played a pivotal role in lifting Canada to their first ATP Cup final.

On Saturday, the 22-year-old left-hander clinched an important three-set win over Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the singles rubber and then paired with Felix Auger-Aliassime to score a come-from-behind win over the Russian pairing of Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin in the doubles contest to take Canada into the final with a 2-1 win over the defending champions.

Shapovalov missed out on two break points in the very first game of the match, but made amends in the third game, breaking Safiullin and seizing the initiative. He didn’t face a ingle break point in the set and sealed it in 50 minutes.

The gutsy Russian fought back in the second set, saving both the break points that he faced and converting one in the last game of the set to force the deciding set.

Shapovalov dug deep in the third, saving six break points in a gripping fourth game to keep the set on serve. He eventually got a vital break in the  seventh game and then kept the lead intact for a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win in two hours and 40 minutes.

Shapovalov didn’t play in the first tie of the group stages against USA, as he was just out of quarantine after having tested positive for COVID-19 on entering Australia. Canada lost the tie 0-3. In the second tie against the great Britain, Canada won the tie 2-1, but Shapovalov lost his singles match to Daniel Evans in straight sets.

The World no. 14, however, pulled off a solid performance against Germany, defeating Jan-LennardStruff 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime also stunned Alexander Zverev in the other singles and Canada won the tie 2-1, moving into the semifinals.

Carreno Busta Extends Unbeaten Run

Facing Shapovalov in the No. 2 singles will be Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta. The 2020 Olympic Bronze medallist has won all four of his singles matches in the tournament so far and is yet to drop a set.

Spain won all three of their matches against Chile and Norway in the group stages and lost just the doubles against Serbia to storm into the semifinals.

Against Poland on Saturday, Roberto Bautista Agut edged out Hubert Hurkacz, while Carreno Busta continued his dominance with a 6-2, 6-1 thrashing of Jan Zieliński.

The 30-year-old struck 24 winners and won 76% first-serve points on his way to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in 55 minutes.

The Spaniard who was 2-1 in the singles last year, improved his ATP Cup record to 6-1 following a perfect run in the first four matches this year. Spain, who finished runner-up to Serbia in the inaugural edition in 2020, were semifinalists last year.

This year they began the campaign against Chile and Carreno Busta won his singles match against Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 76 (7-4). In his singles against Norway, the World No. 20 defeated Viktor Durasovic 6-3, 6-3, while in the final group singles against Serbia, he hustled past Filip Krajinović for a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Can he keep his perfect run going in the final?

Shapovalov v Carreno Busta Prediction and Tip
