Strong Start To Season For Monfils

Former top ten and crowd favorite globally, Frenchman Gael Monfils had a difficult late 2020- early 2021 season.  His poor run of form saw him break into tears asking for mercy after his first round loss at the Australian Open in 2021, which marked six consecutive opening round losses for the Frenchman.

While the season got better for Monfils especially on the American hard courts and European indoor courts thereafter, he remained a shadow of the player that we have known and seen in seasons past.

2022 has got off to a better start for the Frenchman with  consecutive straight set wins here in Adelaide after a first round bye.

Monfils dropped three games in his opener against Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo and then five games against American Tommy Paul to make the final four.

In his semi-final against Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis who is also on a comeback trail formwise, it was a tight first set where the Frechman prevailed 7-5.  There was no looking back for Monfils thereafter as he cruised through the next set without dropping a game and booking himself a place in the title round.

Khachanov Searching Title To Kickstart ’22

Once billed as the one of the Next Gen to watch out for after winning the Paris Masters in 2018 and breaking into the top ten in the ATP rankings, it has not been the best of runs for Russian Karen Khachanov in recent times.

Seeded second here in Adelaide,  the week got off to a tricky start for Khachanov where he was pushed by American Steve Johnson in his first match, before the Russian prevailed in three sets.

Khachanov looked in better touch in the final eight recording a straight sets win against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov and setting up a challenging semi-final encounter against the in-form Croat veteran Marin Cilic.

The match got off on fairly even ground with both players holding serve as the set headed for a breaker. Khachanov upped the ante in the tiebreak and got the early mini-break to go up 4-2 and when Cilic double faulted at 3-5 in the tiebreak, the Russian closed out the set with his big serve 7-3 in the tiebreak.

The second set was more on Khachanov’s terms as he broke at an opportune time and then continued the good serving to close the set 6-3  and make his way into the finals here in Adelaide.

Monfils v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Both Monfils and Khachanov have not had the best of seasons since the start of the pandemic and this week has looked like course correcting for both players.

Expect a good contest between two big hitters, with the better player on the day prevailing. The wily Monfils to prevail in a tight three-setter.

Tip: Monfils to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
